Fixes to build on a modern Arch Linux system

This fixes various API changes; etc; that have happened over the years to enable things to build on a modern system. Thus far I've only tested that it builds and opens a shell; I haven't actually tried using it for anything to check for more subtle problems.

build.sh is a script I was using for testing; I can remove it if you don't think it's more useful in general.
